The Organic East association and its members work to the following principles:
- Organic East is a democratic association of organic businesses in the East of England. In addition to following organic principles, members of Organic East subscribe to the wider ideals of environmental and social responsibility set out in this charter.
- Membership of Organic East is open to all certified organic businesses in the East of England, subject to the approval of existing members and acceptance of this charter. Other businesses selling certified organic produce are welcome to apply but their offer must include a category of products from at least one existing member.
- Approval of prospective members is put to an online vote of existing members and membership granted if at least two thirds of voting members are in favour.
- Members pay an annual subscription, currently £30.
- Members aim to operate with complete transparency, giving full information about production and the supply chain. Wherever possible, members offer farm visits / open days, educational and practical information to raise awareness of the environmental and social advantages of organic, seasonal and fairly traded food and other goods.
- Members welcome feedback from customers, including through user comments and reviews on the Organic East website, and accept that all comments are published with the exception of those that are obscene, illegal or irrelevant.
- Members aim to provide high quality produce and goods at fair prices for producers and consumers.
- Members allow staff to play an active role in their businesses and to enjoy full and fair rights.
- Where possible, members source all produce from other UK and European regions from socially responsible producers and co-ops actively promoting local, direct and co-operative marketing. Outside Europe members seek to source from Fair Trade producers.
- Members favour local, seasonal produce and goods, supplemented by products from other known sources. Any imports should complement not replace local goods, in order to offer a complete organic alternative.
- Members seek to minimise packaging, waste and transport.
